I ordered this Amsec ESL 10XL (Brass) keypad and lockset because my first Amsec ESL 10XL stopped responding to keypad inputs. The only input response was from the letter ‘C’, which is used to wake-up the keypad. My Champion safe originally came with a Sergeant & Greenleaf keypad. The locking bolt mechanism of the S&G operates with a nylon worm gear. This worm gear has been known to wear out. In my case, the motor in this S&G wasn’t able to retract the heavy brass bolt allowing the spoked wheel to be turned even with two new 9v batteries. I read that if you turned the safe upside down, the motor may have enough power to retract the bolt due to the help of gravity. In my case, I used an engine hoist to lower my 1,100 lb. safe on its back. The motor was able to retract the bolt horizontally. Whew……So in July of 2013 I replaced the S&G with its first Amsec ESL 10XL. It worked great for 11 years then the keypad malfunctioned. This second Amsec keypad is all that needed to be replaced because the bolt mechanism works fine and remembers the code without the need to do any reprograming. This new lockset came from Security Hardware Discounters through Amazon. It only took 3 days to receive the new lockset. I would definitely order from them again. The ethernet cable plugs straight into the back of this newer keypad instead of the awkward 90 degree angle the previous one did. In addition, it already had two fresh 9v batteries installed. I just wish I was able to order the keypad only, as I didn’t need the solenoid bolt. I don’t know what causes these keypad failures, but I hope the bugs have been worked out with this new one.
