I couldn't figure it out and almost threw it in the trash. After sitting in a drawer for months, I looked at it like a Rubics Cube. I pulled and it opened up. I love it now. It's very attractive as door locks go.This is a perfect solution for those wanting a little extra security! I love that unlike the other common security locks you see on hotel doors, if this is properly installed, you absolutely cannot open the door one centimeter when it is engaged.Downside for renters is that this does require drilling into the door frame, but it is so sleek & easy to use that I bet your landlord would be fine with it.The finish is more like "orange-gold" than "polished brass" and it is too dark to match the color of a Schlage lockset. The color of the ad photo is pretty accurate, so if you want a faux gold finish, this is it. The nearly identical "Defender Security Polished Brass U 11442" is a more pale yellow color and matches better with Schlage or Kwikset "polished brass" hardware.It was very easy to install, the door feels secure, only way to open is braking the door!!These locks were not hard for us to open like some people said in the reviews. Granted, I don’t have arthritis, so I could see how that could make it more difficult. I think some people didn’t realize that you had to pull on it parallel with the door before swinging the lock around. I’m really happy with these. They seem very strong and make me feel more comfortable that we have locks that can’t be picked from the outside. I would definitely suggest that people buy different screws that are longer and sturdier, but they are cheap so I didn’t knock off stars for that.Bought this based on reviews for the purpose of extra security and keeping toddler indoors. Works great! Super quick and easy to install. Finally a quality product at a good price.This can be installed without much, sometimes no wood removal, thereby maintaining frame strength. There is no external key-way to be picked. Inward opening use only and only to secure the door when the home is occupied.Some reviews have mentioned two important facts, the instructions don't say how to use it, only how to install it, and mention that unlocking is difficult for weak fingers because of the strong spring. Actually I think the issue is not the spring strength but that it needs to be pulled evenly to avoid the surfaces binding. Search the Viper videos online to see how to use it.I'm undecided about using it. In non-lockdown circumstances I would have returned it. The brushed nickel satin finish has a really unpleasant appearance and sharpish edges.Update: I also have the oiled bronze version. A different kettle of fish, nice appearance and a much better non-binding action. Like it was made in a different factory or on a different machine. I would rate the oiled bronze version 4 Stars (5 for the product but losing one for the poor instructions), but Amazon doesn't allow two reviews.Me ha gustado mucho el sistema de cierre que tiene, aunque se le ve sencillo una vez colocado da bastante seguridad. La colocación es sencilla aunque recomiendo marcar primero los agujeros y con un taladro y una Broca fina realizar los agujeros antes de colocar los tornillos, de esta forma evitaremos que se abra la madera. Tambien he puesto unos tornillos más grandes ya que los que trae me parecían pequeños.El el uso es bastante sencillo, se cierra fácilmente y para abrirlo únicamente tendremos que tirar de la parte móvil hacia el costado contrario a donde está colocado y abrirlo, no es necesaria una fuerza excesiva aunque personas muy mayores o niños quizá no puedan. Estéticamente no queda mal. Lo que menos me ha gustado es el color que no es exactamente el color bronce del resto de elementos de la puerta. Best look at the Viper website or instructional video.Some reviews have mentioned that people lacking grip or dexterity might find it difficult to open. I can understand that. The instructions normally say to "pinch" the mechanism when opening but I suggest hooking a finger round each hinge and pulling evenly. Much easier.As soon as I opened the package containing this lock it was clearly a budget version, the machined edges had not been de-burred at all and were sharp, the anodising and general finish were quite poor but hey, it seems to work okay and does the job, it's easy and quick to use and the overall profile makes it easy to see if it has been activated or not. Can't ask for anything more, the sharp edges are buried in the door frame now in any case!Amazing, really easy to install you literally just drill the screws onto your doorframe and it's done, even I could do it so trust me you can too!! Fit for purpose - added privacy on a bedroom door, really easy to do and undo as well you just pull it quickly out and around and it's open - quiet too and you don't have to make any holes in the actual door.
